Save Stopper Dave is a volunteer project using art to raise awareness and funds for the benefit of David Shumate. In 2009, after years of severe drug addiction and depression, he walked into a pharmacy waving a fake gun, swallowed more than enough prescription pills to kill himself, and just for good measure raised his fake gun at the responding police officers, who in turn shot him twice. It was a supposed to be a dramatic suicide ending his life, but fortunately Dave survived. Dave had no violent history and he did not try to hurt anyone but himself during the incident. Witnesses even reported feeling pity for his pain instead of fear of being harmed. At trial, Dave accepted responsibility for his actions, pleading guilty. However this did not prevent Dave from being made an example of during sentencing. Dave is currently serving 20 years with no chance of parole in a maximum security prison in north Georgia, hours away from his family and friends.
Save Stopper Dave is a collective of friends, artists, musicians, and others who believe that Dave’s punishment does not fit his crime. Dave is a troubled person, but he is not a violent psychopath. While he has made mistakes, people who have met him know that he is a funny, generous, and loving person. Most importantly, however, he is a human being in need of the medical attention that severe addiction and depression deserve. Save Stopper Dave seeks to raise money for the lawyers and doctors needed to have Dave transferred from a maximum security prison to a facility that has the resources needed to help a person like Dave. Save Stopper Dave is an all volunteer effort, and 100% of proceeds of Save Stopper Dave benefit Dave directly.
